Bringing Global Perspectives to AI Research

Bringing Global Perspectives to AI Research and Practice

An interdisciplinary research initiative to bring global perspectives to shape the design, development, evaluation, and governance of AI technologies.

Vision

We imagine a future where the transformative potential of AI technologies is universally accessible—a future where AI significantly enhances the lives of all social groups, promoting fairness and inclusivity on a global scale. In this future, AI solutions are as effective for frontline health workers in Africa, teachers in under-resourced schools in South Asia, and migrant communities in the US, as they currently are for people in WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) countries which represent less than 15% of the world’s population. Our vision is a world where AI serves everyone equitably, bridging gaps rather than widening them.

Research Thrusts

AI Practice.

Examine how researchers and practitioners use emerging AI technologies in high-stakes settings in global environments, what values govern the design, implementation and evaluation of these technologies, and what are the emerging challenges and harms of their use.

AI Evaluation.

Evaluate the capabilities of current generative AI models in non-Western languages and cultures, and will examine critically their performance and fairness through novel benchmarking.

AI Impact.

Examine the promise and pitfalls of emerging AI technologies in improving socioeconomic outcomes for historically marginalized user groups in diverse global contexts.

Research and Engagement Approach

Interdisciplinary Research

We use interdisciplinary research to understand and shape the global impacts of AI. Our work draws on methods and insights from computing, social sciences, design, and public policy. We collaborate across disciplines to address real-world challenges, foster inclusive innovation, and develop AI systems that are socially responsive and globally relevant.

International Partners

We produce influential scientific research and create practical impacts. Our strong partnerships with civil society organizations, academic institutions, and industry research labs support all project activities.

Integrating Research and Education

We integrate research and education to enhance knowledge development and educate future leaders. We blend research insights with educational activities, providing research-informed education and involving students in research activities with our international partners.

Community-Engaged Research

We use a collaborative research approach centered on diverse stakeholder voices and equitable partnerships. We engage with international partners and stakeholders, use participatory methods, and conduct interdisciplinary, use-inspired research.

Ethics and Safety

We conduct research ethically and responsibly to avoid unintended harm. We engage underserved communities, review ethics with external partners and Institutional Review Boards, and investigate how design decisions impact structural inequities.
